What PPF does

PPF is a thick urethane film, fitted panel by panel and set into place with a squeegee. It takes the hits that would otherwise mark the paint: stones thrown up on the Mitchell Freeway, road grit, car park knocks and light scratches from washing.

If the film is damaged, that panel’s film can be replaced on its own. The paint underneath stays as it was. It suits new cars, cars driven on the freeway, and anyone who wants the factory paint kept as it is.

  • Stops stone chips

The film is about 190 microns of aliphatic TPU. Defcon rates Glanz and Frozen at almost 10 kg of puncture resistance on a single point, so stones that would chip the paint mark the film instead.

  • Heals light scratches

A self-healing top coat closes fine scratches and wash marks with heat, from the sun or warm water, as long as they have not cut through the top coat.

  • Blocks UV

ARPANSA tested Defcon Glanz in Melbourne in September 2025 and recorded 99.0% of UV blocked. The UV-resistant top coat also protects the adhesive from yellowing.

  • Resists stains

The top coat is made to resist everyday contaminants such as bird droppings, bugs and sap, so they come off with a normal wash.

  • Keeps the factory paint

If a panel is damaged, its film can be replaced on its own. The original paint underneath stays as it left the factory, which helps when you sell the car.

  • Ten-year warranty

Glanz and Frozen carry Defcon’s ten-year manufacturer warranty. As an authorised Defcon installer, we register every job on e-Warranty, and the cover stays with the car if you sell it.

Gloss or satin

We fit two clear films. Defcon Glanz is a gloss film: it keeps the factory finish and adds depth to the colour. Defcon Frozen is a satin film: it turns gloss paint into a soft, low-sheen finish, and it protects factory matte or satin paint without making it shine.

For a full colour change in protective film, see colour PPF.

Where Perth roads chip paint

Most chips come from the car in front. Stones and grit flicked up by tyres at freeway speed hit the leading edges first: the front bumper, the front edge of the bonnet, the headlights and the mirror caps. Roadworks, loose gravel on country roads and trips behind trucks make it worse.

The next zone is the lower sides. Grit thrown back by your own front tyres sandblasts the sills, the lower doors and the front of the rear guards. On a 4WD or ute that has been off the bitumen, the lower panels take the most; see 4WD paint protection.

That is why our packages build outwards from the front: protect where the hits land first, then add the sides, then the rest of the car.

How much of the car

Most chips land on the front of the car, so the front end is where most people start. Front End + Full Sides adds the doors, sills and rear quarters, which take grit from the front tyres. Full Car covers every painted panel.

Time in the studio: 2–3 working days for the front end, 3–4 for front end and full sides, and 5–7 for a full car.

What affects the price

How big the car is and how many curves and vents it has, how much of it you cover, and the film you choose: satin and colour film cost more than clear gloss. Film locks in whatever is underneath, so if the paint needs correcting first, we say so and include it in your quote before any work starts.

How we fit it

Your car in the studio, step by step

The same steps on every job, from the first look under the studio lights to the walk-around when you collect the car.

  1. 01 · At drop-off

    Inspect under studio light

Every panel is checked under the light bars before anything is cut, so marks are found now, not after the film is on.

    • Every panel
    • Under the light bars
Close-up of angular satin grey body panels meeting at a sharp crease under studio light
  2. 02 · Before any film

    Decontaminate and prep

A full wash, then iron and tar removal and a panel wipe, so the film bonds to clean clear coat.

    • Full wash
    • Iron and tar removal
    • Panel wipe
Shelf of paint protection film installation products, cleaners and gel bottles against a pegboard wall
  3. 03 · Only if the paint needs it

    Correct where it is needed

Film locks in whatever is underneath. Where the paint needs it, we polish first and tell you why.

    Cut and fit

Badges and trim come off where the film needs to tuck behind them. The film is cut on a computer plotter or by hand, laid wet and worked in panel by panel, with every edge and corner wrapped so the film line stays out of sight.

  5. 05 · Before pick-up

    Final inspection

The car goes back under the lights for a last check. We register the film on Defcon’s e-Warranty and walk you around the car before you drive away.

  6. 06 · Two weeks later

    Two-week check

Leave the car unwashed for the first week while the film settles. At two weeks we ask you to bring it back so we can check every edge for lifting or peeling and fix anything straight away.

    • No wash for the first week
    • Edges checked for lifting

Why the edges disappear

Edges wrapped out of sight

Film that stops short of a panel edge leaves a visible line, collects dirt and is the first place to lift. So on every job we wrap the film around the edges and corners of each panel, where the panel allows it to tuck out of sight.

  • Hands smoothing clear film around a headlight with the bumper removed and the guard edge masked
  • Clear film being worked into the edge around a Tesla Model Y headlight
  • Clear film squeegeed onto a round Mini headlight, red bodywork around it
  • Close-up of satin film wrapped into the panel gaps on a grey Tesla Model 3

Parts off, film behind

Badges, emblems and trim come off where the film needs to run behind them, then go back on over the film. It takes longer, but there is no cut line around them and no gap for water to get under.

On this LandCruiser 78, fitted in colour PPF, the doors, front bumper and headlights came off before the film went on, so it could wrap into the door jambs and around every edge.

  • Toyota LandCruiser 78 Troop Carrier with the door open, door jamb wrapped in metallic grey colour PPF
  • Front of a Toyota LandCruiser 78 with the bumper, grille and headlights removed for colour PPF
  • LandCruiser door taken off and set on a stand, wrapped in metallic grey colour PPF
  • Inside of a removed LandCruiser door, film wrapped around the outer edge

Plotter cut or hand cut

We cut film two ways. A computer plotter cuts patterns made for your model, accurate to the shape of each panel. Hand-cut film from the roll lets us run extra material around an edge or cover a panel with no pattern, such as a custom bumper or an aftermarket flare. Most cars get a mix of both.

Warranty and care

After you collect the car

A ten-year film warranty, registered for you

MAS Project is an authorised Defcon installer, and we register every job on Defcon Films Australia’s e-Warranty system before you collect the car.

Defcon Glanz and Defcon Frozen carry a ten-year manufacturer warranty from the date they are fitted. It covers manufacturing defects in the film, including abnormal yellowing, cracking, blistering, delamination or peeling, and adhesive failure in normal use. It applies to film fitted on factory paint, and it stays with the car if you sell it.

Normal ageing, slow tone change from years of sun and damage from impacts or poor care are not defects, so they are not covered. Your warranty record states the exact cover for your car.

The first two weeks, and after

The film needs time to settle. Please do not wash the car for the first week after we fit it. You may see small water spots or haze under the film in the first days; they clear as the last moisture dries out.

Two weeks after pick-up, bring the car back for a check. We look at every edge for lifting or peeling and fix anything there and then.

After that, wash the car as you would painted panels: by hand, with a clean mitt and a pH-neutral shampoo, keeping pressure washer nozzles back from the film edges. On satin film, skip waxes and polishes. Our PPF care guide has the full routine.

I found MAS Project online and also a work mate told me he has done his car there and it was great. I decided to give it a go and went there to get to know more about their product options and outcome. [My first contact person] was nothing but amazing with her customer service, very patient and explain the details of everything, I also had [the owner] who took his time and put some samples in my car to help me with my decision. … So, bottom of story, these guys cared about me, treated me very special, even though they were fully booked. Couldn’t be happier enough and the final product is to die for!

How much does PPF cost in Perth?

Our gloss packages start from the front end of a car and go up to the full car, with separate prices for 4WDs. Every price is a starting price including GST; we confirm yours in a written quote after seeing the car. The packages and prices are listed on this page.

How long does it take to fit PPF?

A front end takes 2–3 working days in the studio, front end and full sides 3–4, and a full car 5–7. The time allows for washing, preparing the paint and letting the film settle before you collect the car.

Will I be able to see the film?

From normal viewing distance, no. Up close you may find an edge on some panels. We wrap edges where the panel allows so they stay out of sight.

Can PPF go on a car that is not new?

Yes. We check the paint first. Film locks in whatever is underneath it, so chips or swirls may need attention before it goes on, and we tell you before any extra work is done.

Is PPF the same as ceramic coating?

No. PPF is a physical film that takes stone chips. A ceramic coating is a hard, glossy layer that makes paint easier to clean but does not stop chips. Many cars have both: film where the stones hit, and a coating over the film.

Does PPF turn yellow?

The films we fit, Defcon Glanz and Defcon Frozen, are aliphatic TPU with a UV-resistant top coat, which is made to stop the film and its adhesive yellowing. Any film can shift slightly in tone after years in the sun, but it should not turn yellow.

Can PPF go on matte or satin paint?

Yes. Defcon Frozen is a satin film made for factory matte and satin paint. It protects the finish without making it shine, which matters because matte paint cannot be polished back if it is marked.

Will the film damage my paint when it comes off?

On sound factory paint, the film can be lifted off without harming the paint underneath. Paint that has been resprayed or is already flaking is a risk, which is why we check the paint before we start.

Do you fit PPF to 4WDs and utes?

Yes, often. Each package has a 4WD price, and our recent work includes LandCruisers, utes and American pick-ups. Bigger panels and flares take more film and time, which is why 4WDs are priced separately.

How do I wash a car with PPF?

Leave it for the first week after fitting. After that, hand wash with a clean mitt and a pH-neutral shampoo, and keep pressure washer nozzles away from the film edges. On satin film, skip waxes and polishes, which can leave shiny patches.

What warranty comes with the film?

Defcon Glanz and Defcon Frozen carry a ten-year manufacturer warranty against defects such as abnormal yellowing, cracking, peeling and adhesive failure. We are an authorised Defcon installer and register every job on e-Warranty, and the cover transfers to the next owner.

Can I see the film before I decide?

Yes. Visit the studio to see it on real cars, or ask us to fit a small sample of clear gloss or satin film on your own car.

Do you have a courtesy car?

Yes, when one is free, while your car is with us. Ask about it when we book you in.

See the film on your own car first

Come to the studio and see clear gloss and satin film on real cars under the studio lights before you decide.

If you are choosing between gloss and satin, we can fit a small sample of either on your own car so you can see it on your paint, in your driveway. Samples are for clear gloss and satin film; colour PPF is ordered for each car, so it is chosen from samples in the studio.

While your car is with us, a courtesy car may be available. Ask about it when we book you in.
