Window Tinting in Perth

Window tint is a film fitted to the inside of your car’s glass to cut heat, glare and UV in the cabin. It suits anyone who parks in the Perth sun or wants more privacy, and we fit it to the darkest shade Western Australian law allows. A full car starts from $550, including GST, and is done within one working day.

What tint does for the car

Tint goes on the inside of the side windows and the rear windscreen. It cuts the heat that builds up in a parked car, takes the glare off a low sun, blocks UV that fades seats and dashboards, and keeps what is in the car out of sight.

A full car is fitted within one working day. Drop the car off in the morning and it is ready the same day.

The films we fit

We fit nano-ceramic tint, which cuts heat without the metallic look or the phone and GPS interference some older films cause. Defcon CoolVue and ZR Films NOVA are the films we fit.

Defcon rates CoolVue at 99.5–99.8% of UV blocked and 95.2–96.9% of infrared energy rejected across the three shades we fit; the table below has the figures for each. Infrared is the part of sunlight you feel as heat. Defcon’s figures come from standard test samples, so results on your car vary a little with the glass.

ZR Films publishes 99% UV rejection across the NOVA range, and 98% infrared rejection on every shade except the lightest, NOVA70, at 80%.

How dark you can go in WA

Western Australia sets minimum light transmission for each window (Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014, regulation 260):

  • Windscreen: no tint, apart from a band at the top.
  • Windows beside and in front of the driver: at least 35%.
  • Glass behind the driver: at least 20%, as long as the car has a mirror on each side.
  • Reflectance: no more than 10%.

The lightest shade. Cuts heat and glare with little change in look; legal on every side and rear window.

Illustration only. VLT is the share of visible light the film lets through: a lower number is darker.

Windscreen and old tint

On the windscreen, WA law allows tint only in a band across the top: above the highest point the wipers reach, or the top 10% of the windscreen, whichever is larger. We fit a sun strip in that band, quoted for your car.

If the car has old tint that has bubbled or faded, we take the old film and its glue off before the new tint goes on. Removal is quoted after we see the glass, because old film comes off more easily on some cars than others.

Factory privacy glass still needs tint

Many SUVs, utes and people movers leave the factory with privacy glass in the rear side windows and the rear windscreen. It looks dark, so customers often ask whether it needs tint at all. Privacy glass is coloured in the glass itself. It cuts glare and visible light, but it lets most of the sun’s infrared heat through, and how much UV it blocks varies from car to car.

So we recommend a light nano-ceramic film over it, such as Defcon CoolVue VLT75. It hardly changes how dark the glass looks, and Defcon rates it at 99.5% of UV blocked and 95.2% of infrared energy rejected.

WA law still applies once the film is on: glass behind the driver has to let through at least 20% of light. Privacy glass differs between cars, so we check each rear window with a light meter before and after fitting, and make sure the glass and film together stay at 20% or more.

Glass roofs on electric cars

Many electric cars, from Tesla to BYD and Zeekr, have a large glass roof that does not open. We do not tint these roofs from the inside. Film on the inside of the glass soaks up heat, and a big fixed panel already gets very hot in the Perth sun. Heat that builds up unevenly adds stress to the glass and raises the risk of a crack, and a roof panel is costly to replace.

On a Tesla Model 3 the glass roof and the rear windscreen are one piece, so tinting the rear windscreen would mean tinting the roof glass too. On a Model 3 we fit Crystal Shield over the roof and the rear windscreen together.

For glass roofs we fit Defcon Crystal Shield instead: a clear protection film made for glass, on the outside of the roof. Defcon says it absorbs impacts from hail, stones and road debris, blocks UV and solar heat, and helps hold the glass together under stress. It carries a three-year limited warranty, registered on Defcon’s e-Warranty, and starts from $600, including GST.

A lifetime warranty

The tint we fit carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty. It covers fading or colour change, bubbling, and peeling or lifting at the edges. If something goes wrong with our fitting, such as dust trapped under the film, we fix it.

The first days after tinting

Keep the windows up for two days after we fit the tint, so the film can bond to the glass. In the first days the film may look slightly hazy or show small water spots; they clear as the last moisture dries out.

After that, clean the inside of the glass with a soft microfibre cloth and a gentle glass cleaner.

How much does window tinting cost?

A full car, SUV or ute starts from $550, including GST, in Defcon CoolVue or ZR Films NOVA. Front windows only or rear side windows only have their own prices, listed on this page.

How long does it take?

A full car is done within one working day.

Is the darkest shade legal?

Not on every window. With the film on, glass beside and in front of the driver must let through at least 35% of light in WA, and glass behind the driver at least 20%. We choose each shade for your glass so the window stays within those limits.

Can you prove the tint is legal?

Yes. Ask us when you book, and we measure the light transmission of each window when you collect the car.

What warranty comes with the tint?

A lifetime manufacturer warranty against fading or colour change, bubbling, and peeling or lifting. We also fix any fault in our fitting, such as dust under the film.

Can I wind the windows down straight away?

Keep them up for two days after fitting, so the film can bond to the glass.

Will tint interfere with my phone or GPS?

Nano-ceramic tint has no metal layer, so it does not block phone, GPS or toll tag signals.

Can you tint the windscreen?

Only across the top. WA law allows film on the windscreen only above the highest point the wipers reach, or in the top 10%, whichever is larger, and we fit a sun strip there.

Can you remove old tint?

Yes. We take off the old film and its glue before fitting the new tint. Removal is quoted after we see the glass.

My rear windows are already dark privacy glass. Do they need tint?

We recommend it. Privacy glass cuts visible light but lets most infrared heat through, and its UV protection varies. A light nano-ceramic film such as Defcon CoolVue VLT75 adds heat and UV rejection without making the glass much darker. We check each window with a light meter so the glass and film together stay at 20% or more, the WA limit.

Can you tint my electric car’s glass roof?

Not from the inside. Film on the inside of a fixed glass roof soaks up heat in the glass and raises the risk of a crack. We protect the roof with Defcon Crystal Shield on the outside instead, from $600 including GST.
