Window tinting · The rules
How dark can you tint your car in WA?
In Western Australia, windows beside and in front of the driver must let through at least 35% of light with the tint on, and glass behind the driver at least 20%, as long as the car has a mirror on each side. The windscreen can only be tinted in a strip across the top, and no tinted window may reflect more than 10% of light. The limits come from regulation 260 of the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014.

In short
- Front side windows: at least 35% of light through, glass and film together.
- Glass behind the driver: at least 20%, with a mirror on each side of the car.
- Windscreen: tint only in the top strip, above the wipers or the top 10%, whichever is larger.
- Reflectance: no more than 10% on any tinted window.
The limit for each window
Regulation 260 sets a minimum luminous transmittance for each piece of glass: the share of visible light that gets through it. The lower the number, the darker the window. The table below sets out each limit next to the shades we fit.
| Minimum light through | What we fit | |
|---|---|---|
| Windscreen | No film below the top strip | A sun strip in the top strip only |
| Beside and in front of the driver | 35%, glass and film together | A shade chosen for your glass to stay at 35% or more |
| Behind the driver | 20%, with a mirror on each side | A shade chosen for your glass to stay at 20% or more |
| Reflectance, any tinted window | No more than 10% | Nano-ceramic film, 5–8% reflectance |
From the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014 (WA), regulation 260. Reflectance figures from Defcon’s CoolVue specification sheet.
Glass and film together
The regulation measures the glazing as it is on the car: the glass and the film together. Clear factory glass already holds back some light on its own, so a film sold as 35% reads a little darker once it is on the window.
That is why we choose the film for your glass, not by the number on the box. The rules also cap reflectance at 10%, which rules out mirror-like films; the nano-ceramic films we fit reflect between 5% and 8%, according to Defcon’s figures for CoolVue.
The windscreen
Film is not allowed on the main area of the windscreen. The only part that may be tinted is the strip above the highest point the wipers reach, or the top 10% of the windscreen, whichever is larger. That is where a sun strip goes.
Clear heat-rejecting films sold for the whole windscreen still reduce the light that gets through, so they are not legal on a WA windscreen below that strip.
Factory privacy glass
Many SUVs and people movers come with privacy glass in the rear side windows and rear windscreen. It is darkened in the glass itself, and on some cars it already sits close to the 20% limit before any film goes on.
Privacy glass still lets most infrared heat through, so a light film over it is worth having. Because the 20% limit applies to the glass and film together, we check each rear window with a light meter before and after fitting and make sure it stays at 20% or more. Where factory glass is already below 20% on its own, Western Australia’s Department of Transport handles exemptions for fitting film, and we tell you before any work starts.
How we keep your car legal
Unless you ask for lighter, we fit the darkest shade that keeps each window within its limit, chosen for your glass. If you want proof for your own records, ask us to measure the light transmission of each window when you collect the car.
For a fixed glass roof on an electric car, we fit Defcon Crystal Shield on the outside rather than tint on the inside; the window tinting page explains why.

I found MAS Project online and also a work mate told me he has done his car there and it was great. I decided to give it a go and went there to get to know more about their product options and outcome. [My first contact person] was nothing but amazing with her customer service, very patient and explain the details of everything, I also had [the owner] who took his time and put some samples in my car to help me with my decision. … So, bottom of story, these guys cared about me, treated me very special, even though they were fully booked. Couldn’t be happier enough and the final product is to die for!

What is the darkest legal tint in WA?
With the film on, at least 35% of light through the windows beside and in front of the driver, and at least 20% through the glass behind the driver if the car has a mirror on each side.
Can I tint my windscreen in WA?
Only the strip at the top: above the highest point the wipers reach, or the top 10% of the windscreen, whichever is larger.
Is 20% tint legal on the front windows?
No. The windows beside and in front of the driver must let through at least 35% of light with the tint on.
Does the limit include the glass?
Yes. It applies to the window as it is on the car, glass and film together, which is why a film rated at 35% on its own can read darker once it is fitted.
Can you tint over factory privacy glass?
Yes, with a light film. We check each window with a light meter before and after fitting, so the glass and film together stay at 20% or more. If the factory glass is already below 20% on its own, film needs an exemption from Western Australia’s Department of Transport.
Can you prove my tint is legal?
Yes. Ask us when you book and we measure the light transmission of each window when you collect the car.
